Utility Shut-off Scam
"Your power will be shut off in 30 minutes unless you pay."
How this scam works
A caller claims to be from the electric, gas, or water company and threatens to disconnect service within the hour unless you pay immediately — usually by prepaid card.
🚩 Red flags
- •Threat to disconnect service 'today' or 'within the hour'
- •Demands a prepaid/gift card payment
- •Refuses to let you verify with your utility's official line
- •Often targets small businesses during busy hours
✅ What to do
Hang up and call your utility using the number on a real bill. They don't demand instant gift-card payments.
